Year 8 and Year 10 ambassadors taking part in a special leadership camp.
Earlier this year, a group of our Year 8 and Year 10 ambassadors took part in a special leadership camp at Omaui with the YMCA - a day focused on teamwork, trust, and developing leadership skills in a fun, hands-on way. One of our students, Noah Moeakiola, shared his reflections from the day in his own words.
Noah Moeakiola's Y8 & 10 Leadership Camp Experience:
On the 11th of September, a bunch of us Year 8 and Year 10 ambassadors alongside Mrs Cormack and Mr Thomas headed out to Omaui for a full-day leadership camp with the YMCA.
We kicked things off with trust falls, which were pretty intense at first but once we got into it, it actually helped us trust each other more. There were plenty of boys scared for their lives, but everybody had a go and there was lots of encouragement and teamwork being shown which was awesome to see. Then came the tightrope walk over a pond, full on balance challenge. Everybody was lucky enough to make it across dry but there were some very close calls!
Throughout the day, we all did more team-building activities like a challenge wall, where we had to demonstrate teamwork, strategy and communication to get our teammates over a wall, and a few other group challenges that tested how well we could use our leadership skills such as communication, teamwork and encouragement to complete tasks as a collective. It didn’t matter what year you were in, everyone was working together, and having a good time.
Later in the afternoon, we filled out reflection worksheets. It made me think about what kind of leader I want to be not just someone who talks, but someone who listens and helps others step up too. Then we finished with bivvy building in the bush. Our group made a pretty solid one considering we only used whatever we had around us, and it was an awesome way to wrap up the day.
By the time we got back into the vans, we were muddy, tired, and buzzing. I think the days activities taught us all something about leadership, about each other, and about ourselves.
