Towards the end of 2025, the Paris family generously donated a trophy recognising excellence in Year 13 Economics at Southland Boys’ High School. The Paris Family Cup reflects both a long-standing connection to the subject and a commitment to fostering academic success. It’s a meaningful gesture that ultimately gives back to a subject that has clearly left a lasting impact.
A message from Nyalle Paris:
The decision to present the ‘Paris Family Cup for Excellence in Year 13 Economics’ (with an annual book voucher and $100 cash prize) came after our son, William Paris, attained an NCEA Level 3 Scholarship in Economics.
It is Sophia and my way of thanking SBHS for creating a learning culture in which students can excel through initiatives such as:
1. the ‘SBHS Club’, where students are awarded the academic cap for attaining straight Excellence credits in NCEA
2. Robin Welsh’s Debating Club, where students learn to work as a team, use logic to argue their case, and think on their feet
But wait - there is a backstory here!
Last century, I was privileged to teach Economics at SBHS from 1985 – 1995.
So you could say Economics is in our bloodstream, and presenting the Cup is our way of ‘paying it forward!’
Thank you, SBHS - and thank you Mr Sonal Naicker for your amazing work with SBHS students.
