It is not often that we recommend parents, caregivers, and whānau to watch Netflix programs, however we believe the series ADOLESCENCE is important viewing.
This new drama has prompted conversations around the growing influence on boys and young men. Many of us have heard of Andrew Tate and his version of masculinity. But do we understand the terms manosphere, masculinity, alphas, incels, betas, misogynistic and anti-feminist and their impact on our young men?
Manosphere is a collection of online men’s communities that have become dominated by misogynistic and anti-feminist views.
This series gives us an insight into the secretive and dark world our young people engage in through social media. Research shows that 50% of teenage boys in the UK have encountered Andrew Tate’s content, with many drawn to his messages about confidence and success.
Loneliness, a lack of purpose and a search for connection and community are a big part of what can lead young men towards the idea of manosphere. Ideas around physical fitness and ambition are good, however when they are linked with virulent sexism and a strict set of rules on how you are supposed to act as a ‘real man’ it becomes dangerous and damaging.
Our teenagers don’t always have critical thinking skills, they are often inexperienced, vulnerable, unsure of themselves and can be easily influenced. We want our boys to know what ‘healthy masculinity’ looks like.
We urge you to be involved in your son’s online activities, what they access, what they watch, what impact some of what they see has on them.
Perhaps have some conversations around 'who are the influencers you follow, what do you like about them, what messages they are wanting you to hear’.
