On Sunday the 2 and Monday 3 March we welcomed King's High School from Dunedin for our traditional summer interschool.
On Sunday both cricket matches started with the First Xl and Junior Colts battling their King's opponents. Monday saw the other sports contested along with the Cricket.
Cricket
The Southland Boys' High School Junior Colts were dominant and scored a convincing outright win. Top contributors were Toby Porteous, Thomas Rutledge and Hugo Page. They have now scored two outright wins in the interschools and will be looking for a 3 peat when we take on Otago Boys' High School.
In the First X1 match after a slow start Southland Boys' High School dominated most sessions of play, a solid batting effort from the middle and lower order set a imposing first innings total, with Sam Smaill and Cooper McDonald key contributors. We then bowled King's out for 174 with Henry Hopcroft and Travis Mann providing the bulk of the wickets. This gave us a first innings lead of 65 odd runs. The second innings was a repeat of the first with Sam Smaill and Jack Claridge providing the runs before a declaration. Southland Boys' High School then went about trying to bowl King's out to take outright honours, unfortunately we ran out of time but will happily take the improved performance and first innings points.
Touch
In what was Southland Boys' High School junior touch teams first hit out they came up against a very polished King's team. This was played over 3 games. Our boys showed improvement throughout each game but unfortunately lost all three games. The boys showed some nice skills, and they will be better for the experience. Nixon Esplin and Carter Woosley played well for Southland Boys' High School throughout.
Waterpolo
This was played over two games, King's brought down a large squad of experienced players. The Southland Boys' High School team is building, with several younger players who acquitted themselves well in the games. Although they lost both games they were close and our boys will take confidence heading up to play OBHS. Deacon Koenig in goal played well along with Alesana Lafoga.
Softball
This was an evenly contested series over two games. Both games were tight throughout. In game one Southland Boys' High School came out on top after a slow start. In game two it was tight through the game and King's prevailed 6-5. Southland Boys' High School will use this experience heading into tournament in three weeks.
Tennis
Southland Boys' High School totally dominated in both the singles and doubles taking all matches, the junior paring of George Hammond and Oliver Patterson were particularly good, not dropping a game in both their matches.
Volleyball
The Southland Boys' High School volleyball team came up against a polished King's side. Both teams had their moments in the two game series but in the end King's won the key moments to win both matches. Southland Boys' High School will look to be more ruthless when we take on OBHS next week. Bakaro Tekabu and Leuma Niue were key performers.
Overall result
SBHS – 3.5 Kings – 3.5
