Thank you to Tiwai Point, New Zealand Aluminium Smelter for their generous sponsorship.
Report by Nicola Mills, Sports Coordinator
In August 2024, Tiwai Point New Zealand Aluminium Smelter sent a sponsorship and donation form to the school.
We know that a lot of the boys have parents or grandparents who work at Tiwai Point, and I felt that, as a school, if we could get a grant for some balls, the boys would look after them and be good stewards.
To apply, I had to write about why I thought the Year 7/8's deserved the balls in their classrooms, provide quotes for the balls, and state the amount I was asking for. I couldn’t just write... because the boys are awesome!
I asked for two basketballs, two footballs and two rugby balls for each Year 7/8 room, so they had something to do at break times. Each room would get exactly the same.
And by an amazing miracle we received the grant from Tiwai Point to buy sports balls! Thank you!
I was able to buy two basketballs, two soccer/footballs, two rugby balls AND a volleyball, a training rugby ball each and a tiny rugby ball that they had enjoyed playing with earlier in the year before it landed on the roof.
As I had been able to buy the balls in a sale, I had enough money left over to buy the Year 9-13's some basketballs and three rugby balls, which means at interval and lunchtimes they also can practice their ball skills.
As a school we are very grateful to New Zealand Aluminium Smelters for supporting my application and granting us the funding to supply the classrooms on the first day back in Term 1.
And on behalf of the school - thank you to Ms Mills for applying for the sponsorship and making it all come true!
